Mobile professionals receive PDFs everywhere โ depositions in taxis, HR complaints between meetings, insurance claims in the field. The iOS Markup highlighter is convenient but unsafe for confidentiality: it frequently overlays black without deleting text. This guide shows how to redact on iPhone and iPad using Safari and RedactPDF with the same permanent approach as desktop.
No App Store install required.
Use Safari โ not an in-app browser inside LinkedIn or Slack. In-app browsers sometimes clear storage aggressively or block downloads.
Navigate to your RedactPDF deployment (e.g. https://redactpdf.io/tool).
From Files:
Tap Share on the PDF โ look for "Copy" or save to Files, then in RedactPDF use tap to browse and pick the file from Files picker.
From Mail:
Download attachment โ Open in Files โ then upload in tool.
Drag on iPad:
Drag PDF from Files split-view into the drop zone.
Wait for thumbnails โ large files up to 100MB may take 30โ60 seconds on older phones.
Use the thumbnail sidebar (visible on iPad; scroll horizontally on narrow iPhone widths). Tap page numbers to jump. Count redaction badges on thumbnails to track progress.
iOS Safari supports touch-none overlays โ if drag feels sticky, refresh once.
Enter name or ID in search โ Redact All Matches. Toggle regex only if you understand patterns โ mistakes over-redact.
Pattern buttons find emails, phones, cards (Luhn-validated), dates, and SSN-style strings in one tap.
Tap Download Redacted PDF. Safari offers:
Also save the redaction certificate text file for audit trails.
Open redacted PDF in Files โ tap search magnifier โ hunt for a known redacted string. Zero results is the goal.
Try long-press select on a blacked area โ text should not highlight.
| Device | Experience |
|---|---|
| iPad landscape | Thumbnails + tools + canvas โ near desktop |
| iPhone | Stacked tools panel; rotate to landscape for width |
| External keyboard | Undo/redo shortcuts vary โ use on-screen buttons |
On LTE/5G, marking stays in Safari; Apply redaction sends the PDF over HTTPS once (processed in memory, not stored). Static JS and optional analytics are separate. See /privacy-policy.
VoiceOver users: focus order follows toolbar โ canvas. Contact danishwaqad@gmail.com for friction reports โ we iterate on mobile UX.
Start on iPhone in the field, AirDrop redacted output to Mac for partner review, or vice versa. Zustand state does not sync cross-device โ re-open file per device.
| Issue | Fix |
|---|---|
| File picker empty | Grant Files permission; download attachment first |
| Tab reload | Reduce PDF size; avoid low power mode |
| Download missing | Check Safari downloads manager (arrow icon) |
| Canvas blank | Update iOS; disable experimental content blockers |
Works in Chrome iOS? Yes (WebKit engine) but Safari is primary test target.
Enterprise MDM WebClip? Point WebClip to /tool for kiosk-style access.
Create a Shortcuts workflow: receive PDF from Share Sheet โ open Safari to /tool with clipboard notice. iOS limits deep-linking local files; manual pick in Files remains most reliable. Automation helps field teams standardize the starting URL.
MDM profiles can pin RedactPDF as an allowed domain while blocking consumer PDF upload sites. Pair with on-device verification SOPs. Test after every iOS major upgrade โ WebKit changes affect canvas performance.
Many "PDF editor" apps send files to cloud APIs. Read privacy labels: Data Linked to You, Data Used to Track You. RedactPDF in Safari avoids App Store install but requires network for initial JS load only.
Sustained canvas rendering on iPhone 12 and older can throttle CPU. Pause between long sessions. Processing 100MB files on mobile is possible but desktop remains faster for hundred-page exhibits.
AirDrop redacted PDF to Mac Preview for second search pass. Preview search complements Safari verification. Maintain version labels in filename.
Service worker caching (future enhancement) may improve offline; today cache JS assets by visiting /tool once on Wi-Fi before field work without connectivity. PDF processing itself is offline once loaded.
Use airplane mode while marking in flight if policy requires; you will need connectivity for Apply. Re-enable network only for apply/export and for email of the redacted output via firm-approved encryption.
Drag RedactPDF from Safari and Files side-by-side: left thumbnail navigation, right reference email for names to redact. Stage Manager on iPadOS 16+ supports multiple Safari instances โ avoid confusing which tab holds the unredacted source.
If a matter is under litigation hold, mobile redaction does not replace preservation of originals. Redact only copies designated for production. MDM should prevent automatic iCloud backup of work product camera rolls containing sensitive scans.
Increase Safari text size for tool chrome via iOS Display settings if needed. Redaction boxes remain pixel-aligned to PDF canvas โ zoom the PDF canvas with pinch, not browser text zoom alone.
| Device | iOS | Pass? |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 14 | 17.x | Search zero-hit |
| iPad Air | 16.x | Thumbnail nav |
| iPhone SE | 15.x | Memory on 80MB file |
Document results in your matter file for repeatability.
Mobile redaction in public spaces risks shoulder surfing. Use privacy filters on iPad in depositions. iOS does not notify you if someone screen-records โ physical environment matters.
Do not redact while driving. Voice memos about missing redactions are no substitute for verification on a parked device.
Bluetooth keyboards support undo shortcuts inconsistently in Safari canvas. Use on-screen undo after drawing if Cmd+Z fails.
Add Safari Web Clip to home screen labeled "Redact PDF" with /tool URL. Opens full-screen like an app without App Store review delays.
Bookmark /tool in Safari. Handle the next sensitive PDF before you board the plane โ permanently, privately, without the Adobe subscription or unsafe black highlighter.

You open and mark PDFs in your browser. When you click Apply redaction, the file is sent over HTTPS to our secure redaction service, processed in memory, and returned. We do not store PDFs on disk or in a cloud inbox.
